How To Get Rid of Ants Ottawa,ON

Sometimes ants can be helpful around the house. They kill real pests like bedbugs and fleas. But when ants start to take over your household by storming your cabinets you have no choice but to remove them. The question becomes how to get rid of ants? Well there are some very common methods for tackling the common pest.

Method One: Removing the ant trail

Ants follow a scent trail from their food source to their nest. This trail lets other ants know that it is a safe path to food. If that trail goes into your home, then you need to remove it. Make sure to seal off the entrance to the trail so other ants won’t be able to get in. Next either wipe down the trail with a soapy sponge or with all-purpose cleaner. A vinegar/water solution also works when trying well to get rid of ant trails. Remember to wipe up or vacuum up any remaining ants.

Method Two: Blocking their way

Similar to removing the ant trail, another method to get rid of ants is to block their way. Drawing a chalk line at the entry points to your home is a great deterrent method. The calcium carbonate found in the chalk keeps ants at bay. Ants also do not appreciate the smell of vinegar or lemon. Spraying your entry points with a solution of either kind will also deter ants from coming into your home. If you’re looking to block ants from specifically getting into certain foods, try building an adhesive tape blocker. By putting adhesive tape in front of the food the ants are going for will prevent them from getting into it. Just remember to put the sticky side up, otherwise the ants will just walk over the tape.

Method Three: Bait and Kill

Another common method is using a boric acid combination to kill ants. You mix a boric acid powder with water and sugar, as this  is the most common poison bait. The ants show up to the bait and take it back to their nests to feast. Remember, this type of removal method only works on ant types that bring food back to their nests and queen. Meaning that this method won’t work on carpenter ants. More importantly boric is toxic when ingested by children or other pets. If attempting this method it is important to carefully watch and make sure that only the ants end up with the poison.
