House Centipedes

House centipedes are hideous insects that can elicit many shrieks and screams when seen scurrying on your wall, floor, or ceiling. These creatures are flat-bodied insects with many legs. Their body is quite elongated and each portion of their 1-inch frame has a pair of legs. The total number of legs they have normally amount to 30 if not less, although some believe they possess up to 100. Mature centipedes are usually brownish in colour and are very distinguishable. Their copious number of legs enables them to scurry quickly, thus making them difficult to capture.

Life Cycle & Hibernation

These insects hibernate in dim and dark spaces and their eggs are usually released in damp soil during the spring and summer. Once they have sprouted from their eggs, if not born with a complete segmental body, centipedes gradually grow additional segments to their body. Centipedes can live up to 6 years but take 2-3 years to mature into an adult centipede.

Although they often lay egg outdoors, house centipedes are still capable of completing their life cycle indoors, especially if there is an abundance of food supply available to them. Their nourishment consists of other pests such as, carpet beetles and their larvae, cockroaches, silverfish and other small insects. If you detect a vast amount of house centipedes in your home, this could indicate that there are many other insects in your home that are appealing to their palate.

How They Get Into Homes

These insects normally make their way into your home though windows, or any cracks or crevices in your foundation. It is significant to make sure these are sealed to avoid an infiltration of these insects and many other pests and creatures in your home. Centipedes are capable of biting humans and their bite is said to have the same pain intensity as a wasp sting. Similarly, their bites can also administer sensitive reactions to those who are allergic. However, their bites do not elicit fatal responses.

How To Prevent Them

Although these animals assist in keeping down other population of insects in your home, the presence of house centipedes never sits well with anyone. The mere sight of them is dreadful and discomforting. Being proactive by sealing cracks and crevices around your home, and maintaining a clean property from debris and leaf mulch also helps. Keep areas well ventilated and ridding your home of other insect populations are also key influences.
